How to read NFL spreads, totals and line movement.
NFL betting lines summarize the market's price for a matchup. EdgeLine adds an independent fair-line estimate so readers can compare the market with a consistent model view.
Point spreads
A favorite has a negative spread and must win by more than that number for a typical spread bet to cover. An underdog receives the listed points. A push can occur when the final margin equals a whole-number spread.
Over-under totals
A total is the market's combined scoring line. Over bets need the teams to score more than the posted number; Under bets need fewer. The price or “juice” still matters even when two sportsbooks show the same total.
Line movement
Lines can move because of injuries, weather, market action, risk management or new information. Movement toward a model position may validate the earlier number while also reducing the value still available.
EdgeLine fair lines
The fair line is the model's estimate, not a sportsbook offer. EdgeLine compares that estimate with the live market, ranks the size of the difference, and reports the strongest market—spread or total—for each game.
