The rating uses completed FBS games, scoring margin with an outlier cap, opponent strength, a modest home-field adjustment and shrinkage toward average when a team has played only a small sample. Recent prior-season results receive much less weight because college rosters change quickly.
What does the win probability mean?
A 65% win probability means the model estimates that team would win roughly 65 times in 100 comparable situations. It does not mean the team has a 65% chance to cover the sportsbook spread. EdgeLine displays the two concepts separately.
Example
If Team A is shown at 62% and Team B at 38%, Team A is the model’s more likely outright winner. The estimate alone does not tell you whether Team A is attractive at -7, -3 or on the moneyline. Price and market terms matter separately.
Why opponent strength matters
Two teams can have identical records against very different schedules. Opponent adjustment helps distinguish wins against stronger FBS competition from wins accumulated against weaker schedules.
How EdgeLine handles small samples
Early-season ratings are less certain. EdgeLine pulls limited-sample estimates toward average and labels early probabilities as provisional rather than presenting them with false precision.
