EdgeLine vs the market: what 14 NFL games show
In this small completed-game sample, EdgeLine's average spread error was 10.39 points, compared with 10.86 for its saved sportsbook lines. That is about 4.3% lower error. The market did better on game totals, and nfelo's opening forecast had slightly lower spread error than EdgeLine.
The full comparison
The sample includes 13 Week 5 games and one Week 6 game, using archived EdgeLine versions 4.6.0 and 5.0.0. Every figure below uses the same 14 games. Average error is the average distance from the actual result, measured in points; lower is better.
| Forecast | Games | Spread error | Total error |
|---|---|---|---|
| EdgeLine | 14 | 10.39 | 10.36 |
| Saved sportsbook lines | 14 | 10.86 | 9.75 |
| nfelo opening forecast | 14 | 10.36 | Not compared |
| nfelo closing forecast | 14 | 10.57 | Not compared |
What we learned
The spread result is encouraging enough to keep measuring. The totals result shows why we need separate evaluations: a favorable spread comparison does not establish an advantage on over/under predictions. We will retain misses and keep model versions separate in the live benchmark.
Average scoring error is not a betting win rate or a profit measure. A model can predict a final margin relatively well and still lose a bet at the available spread. Our receipt-backed performance dashboard reports actual graded selections separately, including weekly spreads and totals, probability calibration and missing receipt coverage.
Why this is exploratory
Fourteen games are insufficient to establish that one model is superior. Forecast cutoffs differ. The nfelo data was retrieved after the games; its original publication timestamps and revision history are unverified. This comparison pools two archived EdgeLine versions, rather than representing the current model alone. It is not an independent third-party audit, a complete competitor ranking or evidence of future profitability.
